The Journal – Interview with Paul Delahunty

Back

Paul Delahunty, Information Security Officer, speaks to The Journal about the recent HSE cyberattack and why having a decryption key does not solve the national healthcare system’s problems. He points out that if the criminals are clever, they will have used different keys for different files making the decryption key that the HSE received less useful than it may appear.

Although it is not fully clear why the decryption key was handed over without paying a ransom, Paul points out that just because the HSE have not handed over any money, does not mean that the criminals will not get their payday. He explains how valuable healthcare data is and how easily it can be bought and sold on the dark web.
