Carbon Neutral
Stryve is certified as a carbon-neutral company by one of Europe’s leading
climate partners. Stryve’s employees were enthusiastic and excited to embrace the organisation’s green initiative.
Becoming certified as a carbon-neutral company means calculating the carbon footprint of our organisation based on internationally recognised standards, the Green House Gas (GHG) Protocol, and putting a programme of carbon reduction in place. Where reductions are not possible, for example, essential travel and power, it entails using internationally recognised offsets. Stryve is proud to be the first Irish tech company to be certified as a carbon-neutral company.
Our carbon audit and the development of our carbon-neutral strategy were carried out in collaboration with an Irish consultancy company, Pragmatica.ie.
The company assessed each employee, calculating where each person was living, how long was their commute, how many air miles they typically use per year, how many business trips and how many visits to the office they make. We also looked at paper consumption, consumables, and energy.
Stryve’s staff members across Ireland, Poland and the UK are participating in a community engagement project to focus on reducing their own carbon footprint. Each member of staff has their own emissions ‘budget’ and is encouraged to share any excess some may accumulate with colleagues. This level of cooperation, open communication, and accountability within the team, has resulted in greater awareness and positive change in their behaviour toward the environment.
The audit revealed that most of the energy consumption was from third parties, which focused our minds on choosing partners that are committed to sustainability going forward.
However, the key to Stryve remaining carbon neutral will be through our employees. Stryve is delighted that our carbon-neutral policies have been wholeheartedly welcomed by the team.
The sustainable partnerships that we have chosen to support are Afforestation in Nicaragua, Clean Cookstoves based in Rwanda, Clean Oceans which is a worldwide project and Hydropower in the Congo. These initiatives support sustainable jobs in a disadvantaged part of the world. The projects are directly offsetting the damage caused by carbon emissions but within their communities, it creates employment and benefits the local economy, access to education and opportunities for local people.
In the short term, we have offset our emissions by investing in sustainable projects, but we need to work hard to lower our consumption over time. We don’t want to use carbon offsets indefinitely and want to keep in mind that in the future vehicles purchased will all be electric. We are conscious of adapting to a circular economy by investing in our own sources of energy, electric cars and changing processes internally.
We took a proactive community approach to reduce our impact on the environment. We favour vendors with similar values and continue to reduce emissions. Our sustainable goals unite our team and positively impact our business and the local and global community.
Whilst Stryve is one of the first Irish tech companies to be certified as carbon neutral, we believe, going forward, that many more Irish companies will take personal responsibility for their carbon emission.
